THE PROJECT
What is the collective noun for a group of fireflies? A swarm seems too beastly. A lantern? A twinkle? A shimmer of fireflies? Perhaps a habitat — a moment where countless individual lives come together as one luminous ecosystem.
Firefly Field is a mesmerizing light installation inspired by the delicate world of nocturnal biodiversity and the fragile beauty of the Lampyridae family. Thousands of points of light recreate the movements of fireflies: glowing, drifting, darting, and hovering above the landscape like a living constellation.
Their ever-changing bioluminescence is mirrored in the grass below, transforming the field into an immersive environment where light, movement, and nature become intertwined.
Beyond its visual wonder, Firefly Field invites reflection on the hidden ecosystems that emerge after dark. Fireflies are remarkable indicators of healthy environments, relying on balanced habitats, clean waterways, and thriving plant and insect communities to survive. Their disappearing presence in many parts of the world reminds us of the delicate relationships that sustain biodiversity and the importance of protecting the natural spaces where these small creatures flourish.

Studio Toer is a multidisciplinary design collective based in Eindhoven, founded in 2011 by Castor Bours and Wouter Widdershoven. The studio is known for its innovative, playful approach to art and design, where aesthetics and technology go hand in hand. Their work ranges from light installations to interactive experiences and design objects, and they have exhibited worldwide at prestigious festivals such as Vivid in Sydney, Fête des Lumières in Lyon, and I-Light in Singapore.
