THE PROJECT
These sculptures derive their visual form from basic geometric shapes, intersecting and overlapping, reminiscent of early 20th century Suprematist art. Built with the functionalist principle of ‘form follows function’ in mind, each component and wire serves a specific purpose, contributing both to the structural integrity of each piece’s physical architecture and the electrical function of its circuit – which becomes apparent should one follow each wire from its source to its destination.
The purpose of the freeform circuit construction style is twofold: to highlight the idiosyncratic visual character of electronic components and the circuits they form, and to make the circuit’s internal processes more transparent to the viewer.
Each burst of sound and light becomes a real-time manifestation of the sculptures’ inner workings through sonification and visual feedback, communicating their processes as transparently as possible.
BIOGRAPHY
Eirik Brandal (b. 1991, Stavanger, NO) is an artist and composer. While originally studying music composition, his work has shifted toward electronic sound sculptures, looking to uncover the intrinsic beauty of circuits. By laying the circuits out in an architectural fashion, their context is changed from being functional objects to becoming objects of art. Sound and lights are used as a means to create a sense of transparency between the audience and the internal processes of the sculptures, with the aim of giving the sculptures the characteristics of independent communicative entities.
